Paper Covers Rock has been bringing writers and readers together on Salt Spring Island since 2021. We've hosted 30+ authors in workshops, readings, and conversations — and we're just getting started. Here’s how you can take part in our 2026/27 season:
Writer-in-Residence Program
A self-led writing residency, open to writers of any genre. Includes free private guest-house accommodation. Learn more.Our next application deadline is November 15, 2026.
Not a writer? Come to a resident's public event instead — we'll be sharing their talks, readings, and workshops throughout the season.
Reading Retreats
A weekend read-aloud party, where twelve of us read one novel out loud, together, start to finish.
You get your own copy of the book, we take turns reading out loud, and by the end of the weekend, we've all finished it together.
Small groups, capped at 12
One book, read aloud over one weekend, on Salt Spring
No assigned book, no discussion required. Just show up with whatever you're reading and enjoy an hour of quiet company with fellow readers. Always free.
Last Sunday of every month, with rotating venues dependent on weather.We’re an official chapter with Silent Book Club, which has thousands of chapters worldwide.

Writer-in-Residence
Andromeda Romano-Lax worked as a journalist and travel writer before turning to fiction. Her first novel, The Spanish Bow, was translated into eleven languages and named a New York Times Editors' Choice and a Library Journal Best Book of the Year. Four more novels — The Detour, Behave, Plum Rains (winner of the Sunburst Award), and Annie and the Wolves — followed her interests across art, history, science, and travel.
She's since turned to suspense with The Deepest Lake and What Boys Learn, and her next book is a historical novel about Sylvia Plath.
She's taught fiction in two MFA programs and works with novelists and memoirists as a book coach.
While she's here, Andromeda is teaching one workshop and offering a limited number of one-on-one manuscript sessions.
